BACKGROUND

Like most Canadian kids in the sport, Ellen Pennock got introduced to triathlon while doing a Kids of Steel race at the age of 10 in her hometown of Calgary. She rode her pink mountain bike and ran the entire run with her shoes and shorts untied. Her career was put on hold for a few years since that flashy debut when Ellen’s swim club encouraged the water-logged swim kids to test their fitness at a triathlon.

She gave it another shot – this time after discovering elastic laces!

Everyone who finished the race qualified for the Alberta Summer Games so all of her friends went to Red Deer, and had a super fun experience.  From that summer on, Ellen’s family would venture out to Kelowna for the Apple Triathlon and make a fun-filled family vacation out of it.

Ellen has been on a quick development curve in her athletics since her swim days as a nine-year-old with the Cascade Swim Club. In junior high, she ran cross-country and track for school, and enjoyed competing in school races.  In high school, Ellen joined the University of Calgary Athletics Club, and upped her running. In the summers, she would race some triathlons to keep herself busy.

In her first year at the senior level, Ellen has proven herself as one of the quickest runners in the sport. He quick development continues as she rubs shoulders with the world’s elite. Ellen ran to the podium three times at Pan American Cup races in 2012, and finished fourth in her first World Cup sprint in Edmonton.

Outside of sport, Ellen is pursuing a general science degree at the University of Victoria. If she wasn’t in triathlon she would likely be a ski bum. She enjoys hiking in the mountains with her family and likes pottery. One day, Ellen would like to own a gourmet doughnut store.
